The subtraction function enables the exact determination of the Dry film weight on a measured surface by weighing on an analytical balance before and after stripping the film. The spreading rate (H) and the Wet film thickness (T) can then be calculated using the following simple relationships:

Whereby:
H = spreading rate (m²/L), (ft²/gal).
T = wet film thickness (µm), (mils)
A = Test area (cm²)
D = Density of the colour (kg/L)
M = dry weight of the film (g)
N = non-volatile weight percentage of the applied colour

This method represents a breakthrough in terms of time savings in the precise measurement of the spreading rate (or wet film thickness) when determining hiding power.
