5750 - Flexible Material Abrasion Kit

The Flexible Material Abrasion Kit utilises the linear friction of a hemispherical pin with a diameter of 1.5 mm to ablate the cross-section of a test specimen.

The test specimens are approx. 38 mm (1.5 inches) wide and 50 mm (2 inches) long. After being placed on a cylindrical 12 mm mandrel, the test specimens are fixed in place with a cover plate. Two rubber strips incorporated into the cover plate press against the sides of the specimen to minimise slippage and ensure that the specimen is held rigidly during the test.

A recess in the cover plate allows the pin to make contact with the test sample. Under controlled pressure and abrasion conditions, the pin moves back and forth along the centre line of the mandrel over the sample. If a breakthrough occurs, the test is automatically stopped.

Note: This test may not be suitable for films that stretch and create waves during the test or have a thickness of more than 0.25 mm (0.010 inch).

Thermoplastische Folien

Thermoplastic films are often used for the packaging of food, sterilised medical devices and other products. However, during distribution and handling, movement can occur between the product and the packaging film or secondary packaging. Shocks, vibrations and/or repeated rubbing can cause the product to wear away the cross-section of the film, increasing the risk of damage to the packaging. In the case of food, this can impair freshness, while in the case of medical products, the sterility barrier can be destroyed. With the Flexible Material Abraser Kit, you can assess which packaging options will best withstand the typical events associated with the handling, distribution and storage of your product.

Abrasion tool

The needle tip has a diameter of 1.5 mm and is made of stainless steel with a hardness of Rockwell C55 to C61 and a surface finish of 8 rms.

Evaluation

The number of cycles until breakthrough provides an indication of the abrasion resistance.
