1700/1750 / 5900 - Magnetic stripe abrasion

SKU: Taber 1700/1750 / 5900 - Magnetic Stripe Abrasion Category:

Due to the importance of the information encoded on the magnetic stripe, it is important that it is durable and abrasion resistant. Two common methods are used to assess the abrasion resistance of magnetic strips. In both tests, the magnetic stripe is subjected to controlled abrasion and the signal amplitude of the magnetic stripe of a sample is compared before and after abrasion.

Magnetic stripe abrasion kit

The Taber Magnetic Stripe Abrasion Kit is used in conjunction with the Taber Reciprocating Abraser 5900 (sold separately) is used. This in ISO 10373-2 The kit described here contains a cylindrical aluminium grinding head with a width of 5 mm and a radius of 10 mm. Card samples are attached to a card holder or other products are attached to the sample table of the Reciprocating Abraser. With the radius edge perpendicular to the magnetic strip and a force of 1.5 N, the head is moved back and forth over the magnetic strip for 2000 cycles at a speed of between 200 mm/s and 500 mm/s. The signal amplitude is measured after each cycle. After the test, the signal amplitude is compared with the value recorded before the abrasion.

Taber Rotary Abraser

Another way to evaluate the abrasion resistance of magnetic strips is to use the Taber Rotary Abraser 1700/1750. The test method ANSI INCITS 322 beschreibt ein Verfahren, bei dem CS-10F-Wheels mit einer Load of 500 g to grind off a 1 1/4 inch "read area" on the magnetic strip. The test is repeated until an average signal amplitude of 70 % of the initial value (or less) is achieved or until 5,000 cycles are reached.
