Taber Rotary Scratch Tester 550 / 551

Taber Rotary Scratch Tester 550 / 551

SKU: Taber 550 / Taber 551 Category:

A removable scale bar is mounted on a pivot shaft that protrudes from an adjustable gauge block. An adjustment screw allows the axis of rotation to be raised or lowered according to the thickness of a test sample up to 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). This adjustment makes it possible to keep the scale beam in a level position in relation to the sample and the turntable. The scale beam is equipped with an integral bearing and can be tilted to a rest position that allows the operator to mount or remove samples.

A calibrated sliding weight is attached to the balance beam. By changing the position of the sliding weight, the load applied by the scoring tip (shearing tool) can be adjusted between 0 and 500 grams. A second calibrated weight can be attached to the end of the balance beam, which increases the load capacity and extends the scale to 500 to 1000 grams. The scale beam has engraved graduation marks corresponding to 10 grams per graduation.

The motorised turntable is operated by an on/off switch and rotates at a constant speed to ensure greater accuracy of test results. The turntable rotates anti-clockwise, but can also be reversed with a simple conversion (contact Taber for more information).

For scratch-sensitive materials, an optional modified balance beam weight set is available, which adjusts the balance by 1/10 to a range of 0 to 50 grams. To increase the test load from 1000 to 1500 g, an optional balance beam fixed weight is available. To fulfil EN 13310 (Kitchen sinks - Functional requirements and test methods), an optional weight is offered that provides a load of 15N.

Model overview

  • Shear / Scratch Tester – Modell 550 (115V, 60Hz)

The 550 model operates at a speed of 0.6 rpm and includes the S-20 and 139-55 cutting tools.

  • Shear / Scratch Tester – Modell 551 (230V, 50Hz)

The model 551 operates at a speed of 5 rpm and includes the S-20 and 139-56 cutting tools. This device fulfils ISO, DIN, EN and other European test standards.

Scraper tools

Various tools are available for use with the shear/scratch tester to assess the scratch and shear resistance of a material:

The scraping and shearing tools wear out over time. Due to the differences in the material of the test specimens, it is not possible to predict how long the tool will last. A diamond standardisation plate is also available to perform the standardisation procedure referred to in historical versions of the ISO 4586-2 test method. These plates are made from a moulded sheet of high molecular weight polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and provide a cost-effective method of determining whether the diamond tool is worn. Each plate is sold in packs of two, is 4 inches tall, has a 1/4 inch centre hole, is pre-dried and vacuum sealed.

Taber recommends keeping an additional tool on hand for standardisation purposes. If you have access to optical measuring devices that provide ±0.01 mm and ±1° accuracy, you can monitor the wear of your scribing tools. Check the tool at specific intervals (e.g. every 250 or 500 tests). If any flattening or other type of damage is detected, the scoring tool should be discarded and replaced with a new one.

Evaluation

Coating Adhesion RankNOTE: An irregular or "jumpy" cut, not caused by careless testing procedures, may indicate inconsistent composition or surface irregularities.
