Comprehensive Abrasion Test
Comprehensive Abrasion Test
A universal testing machine for testing the abrasion resistance of coatings on beverage cans or flat materials. It imitates transport in practice to test abrasion damage and thus improve quality control.
Evaluate coatings with a comprehensive abrasion test machine
The Comprehensive Abrasion Test is a universal testing machine designed to test the abrasion resistance of coatings on cans or other types of packaging or materials. The reciprocating motion of the abrasion tester mimics in-situ transport damage to coatings according to the Gavarti Associates "GV-CAT" system. This comprehensive abrasion testing machine is used in coating test laboratories for quality control work and is particularly useful for testing beverage cans.
Features and benefits
- Testing the abrasion resistance of coatings
- Back and forth movement of beverage cans
- Imitates transport damage in practice
- Menu-driven operation
- Drawer for spilled liquids
Why abrasion test cans and packaging materials
Beverages often suffer from heavy wear and friction during transport, as do cartons and a variety of flexible packaging products. And damaged and worn cans or packaging can have a major economic impact Abrasion testing is a must. For example:
Abrasion damage makes it difficult to sell products
Typically, food in damaged packaging is difficult, if not impossible, to sell to the consumer. A small scratch is enough to render the goods worthless.
Abrasion can lead to leakage or spoilage
If the paint (or ink) cannot withstand the scrubbing movements during transport and bare aluminium starts to rub against bare aluminium, a can can leak within minutes. Drinks can splash and spill all over the shipment, especially if they are carbonated.
With more than 300 billion cans sold worldwide every year, you can imagine how high the cost of such damage can be. Want to learn more about the impact of cans on the packaging and testing industry? Take a look at our "History of the can" timeline.
Uncomplicated abrasion testing machine
This machine is a comprehensive solution for testing the abrasion resistance of paints and coatings on beverage cans, cardboard boxes or aluminium book covers.
How the abrasion test works
- It simulates the movement of a lorry or train during transport and is used to assess the abrasion resistance of printed cartons, book covers and containers.
- The printed sample sheets or containers can be placed between the printing plates with or without elongated blocks and accessories.
- The hydraulic plungers push the holder with the samples and optional blocks in a wave motion from the side to simulate transport vibrations.
- At the end of the test, the abrasion can be analysed from sample to sample or from sample to normal paper.
Since the failure of the coating can have two causes, the tests must be carried out both on the side of the paint manufacturer and on the side of the can manufacturer/paint applicator.
