For the assessment of mottling, absorption resistance and porosity of coated paper
This test ink provides a quick and easy way to monitor variations in paper structure and porosity from batch to batch. As coated paper has a relatively high holdout, a high penetration ink, such as TK-11, is required to obtain a sufficiently strong colour and mottle pattern.

Test procedure
The ink is applied to the paper to be tested using a spatula or a drawdown applicator. After one minute, the ink is removed by scraping off most of the ink with a ruler and carefully wiping off the rest with a clean paper towel. The resulting test sample is visually inspected for stains and porosity. To obtain an instrumental value for porosity, the CIE-Y reflectance or densitometer values of the coloured and uncoloured areas are measured and then calculated:
